Compromise

From the time I was born
I thought I was free
To do as I chose
But I was all wrong
Life turned out to be a compromise.

As a baby I could not choose
My own clothes or food
I babbled and I cooed
But was not understood
Life turned out to be a compromise.

As a child when I found my voice
Nobody paid attention
To any of my thoughts and tension
But I was not too juvenile
Life turned out to be a compromise.

And as I grew older
My choice of a career or a life partner
Were selected by others
And as always I was ignored
Life turned out to be a compromise.

Now that I am old and infirm
My thoughts don't reach them
They cut and tear my body to keep me alive
But I know about my mortality
Life turned out to be a compromise.
