Not mine to lose

I have loved you for such a long time now
I can't carry on without you.
You have become a part of my existence
Without  you even knowing I exist.

You came to my life in my teenage years
With the first stirrings of love
My heart did not know what it was feeling
But understood your worth.

As I  grew older and understood
That you were a far off dream
I could not get me to forget you
Hard as much as I tried.

Now I pass through life with joy and smile
Though in my heart of hearts I know
I will never get you in my life
Will have to settle for second best.

I hear his music wafting by The mellifluous sound of the flute Much before I see him pass The strains of his melody Puts my worries on the mute. The tunes of his flute Drfting through my window Uplifts my spirit Takes away my distraught Makes me ready to face the world. I run to the window to see him pass As everyday I am surprised to see His thin, old body Weary and bent But his face aglow with the music he plays.
